Celebrate Disability Pride Month with RISE
Disability Pride Month has been celebrated every July since the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law in July 1990. This powerful law provides people with disabilities access to fundamental civil rights and legal protections, such as publicly accessible accommodations and unlawful employment discrimination. While the ADA was an outstanding achievement for individuals living with disabilities, various stigmas, misinformation, and negative perspectives regarding disabilities remain. Join RISE Services, Inc. Arizona, as we learn how Disability Pride Month erases negative perspectives and honors children and adults living with disabilities and their families.
What Is Disability Pride?
Disability Pride acknowledges that individuals with disabilities are an essential part of human diversity. They are valued members of society and deserve recognition from others and themselves. This movement encourages children and adults with disabilities to be proud and not ashamed of who they are. It also promotes an inclusive environment for individuals living with disabilities, where they are welcomed and respected regardless of their race, gender, ethnicity, or disability.
What is Disability Pride Month?
Disability Pride Month honors individuals living with disabilities by celebrating their gifts and abilities, embracing their unique qualities, and highlighting their innate value and worth as fellow members of society. It provides opportunities for individuals to learn more about disability culture and why disability pride matters. This global event raises awareness about discrimination and uninformed stereotypes surrounding people with disabilities. Individuals with negative attitudes towards the disability community are encouraged to let go of these archaic perspectives and embrace children and adults living with disabilities as valued members of their communities.
